As the hype to the 2019 tripartite elections keeps proliferating, a missing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) voter registration kit has been found in the neighbouring Mozambique.

The registration machine went missing when it was being transferred from Lilongwe to Mwanza.

It was found in a train belonging to Valley Logistics which was ferrying coal in Mozambique.

Speaking to a local radio station, MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the kit in question is now in the country.

Mwafulirwa: no information was lost

He added that no information has been lost and the electoral body is looking into the matter in conjunction with the police.

The issue has raised fears among Malawians on the prospects of having free and fair elections next year. Some people suspect foul play from some major political forces in the country.

However, others believe it is unethical to jump into conclusions at this stage of the case, calling on those who suspect foul play to wait for the outcome of the investigation.

  1. MECER should explain very clear, my suggestion is that Machine might be bought for the planning of rigging election next year. They might be lying to say that that machine is for registering voters.

  2. Hasn’t it synchronized data entered from Mozambique? The best way was to destroy the machine and not tasting it if it is okay. By the way did MEC inform the public that a machine is missing?
