The opposition People’s Party (PP) says there should be age limit for political leaders since some politicians fail to deliver due to old age.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi24, PP General Secretary Ibrahim Matola said Malawi needs young people in political positions in the country hence politicians should be forced to retire at a certain age.

“How old is the minister of finance? These are people that just sleep in conferences instead of contributing.

“We need to have young people that can contribute meaningfully to the development of this country, the same happens with people working in others sectors when they reach a certain age they are forced to retire so why not politicians?” wondered Matola.

He added that age limit will also help the youth in the country to be taking leadership roles in various political parties in the country.

Malawi is yet to set an age limit for president, Members of Parliament (MPs) and cabinet ministers.

  25. Not only polititians, and the same have to apply to those working in public sector, even if it means to reduce the retirement age to at least 50yrs old to pave way for the ‘unemployed youths’ which is highly rated…

I definitely support the idea coz in the political circle,the elderly always cling to until they forced/impeached this is a hackle raising issue.They keep changing from one party to another were they feel its succulent and lot of cash to spice themselves,if a law can be enacted to set an age limit.

    1. Remember those old politicians joined politics when they were young and they have potential to win coz they have influence in their sites. So if age is going to be their limt, there will be chances to a chinyamata like you.
