Branches of Chipiku Stores are evading tax by not issuing Malawians with electronic receipts, Malawi24 has learnt.

The Chipiku branches, it has been observed, are instead giving Malawians handwritten tickets for their purchases in a bid to avoid remitting Value Added Tax (VAT) already paid by the shoppers.

The handwritten receipts which Malawi24 has seen, show among other things the purchases customers have made, the amount of the purchase, and the name of the customers.

The receipts also have the word paid underlined and written in red ink.

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) was not immediately available for comment but the tax collector has been encouraging registered Value Added Tax operators to purchase and use Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFD) which are used for remitting necessary taxes to the authority.

The authority also conducts campaigns to encourage Malawians to demand EFD receipts whenever they make a purchase.
