Kyungu: Wants Karonga upgraded.

Calls to upgrade Karonga to a municipality have resurfaced, with Paramount Chief Kyungu of the district demanding an urgent response from government on the matter.

Speaking with this publication, Chief Kyungu said he is impressed with the pace at which Karonga is developing, something he claims qualifies the district to be declared a municipality.

According to Kyungu, he already discussed the issue with President Peter Mutharika but was surprised that nothing is cooking up from the office of president and cabinet.

On his part, Karonga district council chairperson Patrick Kichombe said his office already forwarded all required documents to the ministry of local government and is only waiting for a response.

Kichombe added that development projects which are taking place in Karonga are a clear indication that authorities should allow the district to be upgraded into a municipality.

Meanwhile, minister of local government and rural development Kondwani Nankhumwa has said his office will look into the matter and address the calls.
