The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) will for the first time since its establishment host University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (UMSSA) games at its magnificent campus at Ndata farm in Thyolo. The games will begin this coming Saturday.
The University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (UMSSA) which is also a member of Southern Africa Universities Staff Association (SAUSA) is an association that comprises of staff from various constituent colleges of University of Malawi (Unima), Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar), Mzuzu University ((Mzuni), and this year’s host Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST).
“The association main objectives are to promote sports recreation, healthy lifestyle and cultural development of staff in their respective universities/colleges,” said MUST Communications Manager James Mphande.
He proceeded by saying that the games are also aimed at fostering existing friendly relations among members of the involved institutions and encouraging sports at all levels.
“It is this association’s belief that relationships created through participation in sports have significant potential of building bridges in academic and research endeavours among the involved universities,” said Mphande.
Games that will be played at the event are soccer, netball, volleyball and athletics.
University teams are expected to compete against each other and since Catholic University will participate in this event it has been named as a guest institution.
Apart from the games there will also be a cultural evening where all institutions will showcase traditional dances of their preference.
Meanwhile, Malawi University of Science and Technology is calling upon the general public and all sports lovers to go and watch the activities.
