Chavula: has been congratulated by Mutharika

The movie director, Mhango is also an actress whose reputation in the country’s creative industry remains sound. Her movie has made history as it is the first from Malawi to earn recognition from Africa Magic.

After receiving the golden horn, the director dedicated the honour to Malawians.

The president has therefore decided to praise the good work in public as a way of showing patriotism and encouraging youthful Malawians who are also striving to put the country on the map.

“The first lady and I are pleased to congratulate movie director and actress, Joyce Chavula  for winning the best Southern Africa movie at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards in Nigeria. The award symbolises the growth of Malawi’s creative industry and that recognition will compel players to do more to grow the sector,” reads part of the message from the president.

Mutharika also saluted all Malawians who are trying hard to market the country and all those that had a hand in the movie.

He then advised Malawians to embrace the three guiding pillars which are hard work, patriotism, and integrity saying they are a perfect formula for success.

The Malawi movie industry is still in the early stages of growth with only a few movies that are worth international awards.
However, players in the industry claim they will work hard to elevate it until it matches Nigeria’s Nollywood which is Africa’s largest movie industry.
