Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, who was this week arrested for treason, says she is not shaken with her arrest  because she is in solidarity with the people who she said “are suffering” under the regime of President Peter Mutharika.

Speaking soon after being granted bail on Tuesday, Kabwila assured Malawians that “MCP will always walk with the people” as her party shares their concerns.

“The way I slept in police cell is the way people in Malawi are currently sleeping, they sleep without eating, without even a promise of where they will eat tomorrow. That’s how I spent my night. I am therefore on the right side of the law because I am in solidarity with my people who are suffering. MCP will always walk with the people” said Kabwila.

The Malawi Police made a u-turn yesterday saying it only arrested Kabwila to warn her. The police had however confirmed on Tuesday that they had charged the MCP spokesperson with treason. But speaking at a press briefing yesterday, Inspector General of the Malawi Police Lexten Kachama said Kabwila was yet to be charged.

MCP has claimed that the government had trumped up charges against Kabwila and two of its members, Ulemu Msungama and Peter Louis Chakhwantha who is also Parliament Legal Affairs Committee chairperson for demanding President Mutharika to resign.
