Mutharika refuses to resign

He may have been moved by calls for him to resign but Malawi President Peter Mutharika has no kind words for critics who want him to pack his belongings and leave the state house for what they dub as ‘vision-less leadership’.

After a recent indaba by religious groupings under the umbrella body Public Affairs Committee (PAC), delegates resolved that it is now time for Mutharika to resign saying the current woes haunting the nation are evidence that his government has failed to lead the nation.

But the Malawi leader argues that the woes haunting the nation now are global and that Malawi is not exceptional not to be hit by such problems. One of highly cited area is one of the continued devaluing of the Malawian currency.

A recent report by international financial experts reveals that the Malawi Kwacha has lost about 35% of its value under the leadership of Mutharika, making it one of the worst currencies in Africa.

But Mutharika says instead of calling for him to resign it is time for Malawians to join him in addressing the problems haunting the country including the increasing cost of living as well as the hunger situation.

“The problems we are facing are for all Malawians and are also being faced all over the world. We can only overcome them if we work together and love one another,” said Mutharika when he presided over the elevation of TA Ngolongoliwa to Senior Chief at Thyolo Community Ground in Thyolo district..

On the maize crisis, Mutharika insisted that the staple grain is available in Agriculture Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) depots across the country but it is being stolen by unscrupulous people.

“How can one steal maize so that other people should die? Is that wise? That is stupid,” said Mutharika and promised to make a statement on the crisis.
