A picture of pupils learning under a rock in Kasungu has been making rounds on social media.

In the picture, a teacher is teaching standard five students at Katope School in the district; the pupils are seated on their desks while a big rock provides them with shelter.

For many social media users, the picture is representing the problems students in schools across the country face.

Malawi24 understands that the school does not have enough classrooms, a situation that forces the teachers to use a cave as a classroom.

A concerned parent from the area told Malawi24 that the problem at the school has been there for a decade. She said the issue has been reported several times to government officials but no action have been taken so far by authorities.

“I come from the area, the problem of classrooms and teachers have been here for ages. We tried several times to report it but nothing has been done. Though it looks funny but our kids are not safe learning under the rock,” she said

Katope School is in Traditional Authority Wimbe in Kasungu district under Livwezi Zone, Central East Education division. The school is close to Kasiya Trading Centre.
