PP Northern region members form breakaway party

Members of Malawi’s ex ruling People’s Party (PP) in the northern region have formed a separate party which they hope will change the way government functions.

Former Member of Parliament in Mzimba South constituency Paul Shawa is among the politicians who are members of the breakaway party.

Speaking to Malawi24 over the weekend, Shawa said many PP members have shown interest to join the new party.

Shawa, a lawyer by profession said the former PP members have named their party Union Party (UP) and want to focus on the need for drastic changes in the way government functions.

“Ours is a call to an upheaval in which the form of government is altered, but in which property relations are for the most part left intact. In this regard, the study or survey will focus on whether there is need or support by Malawians for an abrupt, rapid and drastic change in the way government functions and how Malawians respond to governmental actions or omissions,” said Shawa.

Shawa who is based in Canada further said the party will be guided by a great love for Malawians and they hope that the members will transform this love into actual deeds for the betterment of Malawians

“Our members are nationalists as opposed to anarchists or fascists In our quest we are driven by the unacceptable fact that after over 50 years of independence, government after government lament the loss of donor support; that a nation that begs, year in year out, unashamedly, is not, an independent country; that a government that plunders and burglarizes its treasury, year in, year out is not a government of the people, by the people, for the people.

“Union Party intends to be revolutionary in its approach. In the coming months you will be privy to the findings of our study and may publish to Malawian those findings,” Said Shawa.

Shawa served as Member of Parliament for Mzimba South constituency from 2009 to 2014. He lost his seat to PP candidate Maquenda Chunga in the 2014 tripartite elections. He however declined to shed more details if he is available to contest in the 2019 parliamentary elections.

He said: “I am unable to tell right now. I only hope that by 2019 Union Party will be up and running. As for any other political office, it is the members of Union Party once registered to decide.  I would not rule out Union Party, once registered, fielding a presidential candidate.”

  6. “Shawa, a lawyer by profession … who is based in Canada … “

Yes, but a crooked lawyer who was twice hauled before a law society in Canada for misconduct, and was convicted in 2003 in a court of law there for stealing funds from his clients. He should never have been allowed to stand in the 2009 elections for MP, because his candidacy violated two conditions of Section 51 of the Constitution.

“A person shall NOT be qualified to be nominated or elected as a Member of the Parliament if that person … has, within the last seven years, been convicted by a competent court of a crime involving dishonesty or moral turpitude … (or) …. owes allegiance to a foreign country … “

In September 2000, Shawa was disciplined by the Manitoba Law Society for misappropriation of his client’s funds (1). He was suspended from practising for one year and penalised with costs of CA$10,000. However, in February 2003 he was further prosecuted and convicted in the Manitoba Provincial Court over the same issue. His case is documented on a website which was set up to expose his shady practices (2)

In September 2008, Shawa was again dragged before a hearing of the Manitoba Law Society (3). This time he was convicted of professional misconduct, once again fiddling about with money, and attempting fraud over state benefits. He was fined CA$5000, with the same again in costs, and handed a six month suspension from practising, to start on 01-November. It would appear that Shawa then immediately left Canada, in time to campaign fraudulently in the May 2009 elections here in Malawi.

It is highly likely that Shawa is a Canadian citizen. He went to that country around 1980, where he married and started a family who are still there. Canadian immigration rules allow a landed immigrant to apply for citizenship about 6 years after entering the country. It is inconceivable that being established with a family in Canada that he would not take advantage of the opportunity to become a citizen. Candidates for election as MPs are not allowed to be dual citizens.

“ … a government that plunders and burglarizes its treasury, year in, year out is not a government of the people … I would not rule out Union Party, once registered, fielding a presidential candidate.”

In a properly run country, such a deceitful individual would never be allowed to run for high office, especially when he already has convictions for misusing other peoples’ money. However, here in Malawi anything goes: in the 2014 elections we had jailed convict Davis Katsonga run for president.

  7. Thats what we call mediocrity and greedy at its best; Becouse someone from another region was appointed vice or acting President for PP then the party has become a taboo to mr Shaba? Regionalism is not a solution to PP or Malawian politics, its rather a dividing entity to political parties & its followers; United we stand, Divided we fall- this miopic thinking of regional politics must stop, otherwise it will take a hundred years for a regional party to rule this country; Take a leaf to what happened to AFORD, can you find it in the Central or Southern regions? I accept Malawian politics is based on regionalism but it depends on how popular the party is minus regionalism;

  8. Dis is madness at its best! How can a small party dat has never won any General elections in de country be dividing itself like de multiplication of a cell in a human body? & 4 De northerners,Wen r we going 2 learn 2 do things in oneness? No wonder some ada tribes says we R very bostful,How can a small region like dis B having 2 many political paties? Dats another problem of havn 2 many educated people in an area bcoz everyone jst wants 2 B a boss on his own.No unity. So ummm, we r used 2 dis kind of politics in malawi.Dere’s nothing strange abt it.

    1. As a matter of correction Sir,its not the North that has many educated people in Malawi. Its the South, only that Northerners are arrogantly boastful.
