A worker at Malawi’s Kawalazi tea estate in Nkhatabay has been arrested after he was involved in a sexual relationship with a minor.
The man identified as 20 year-old Andrew Bernard has been sleeping with the 14 year-old girl since May last year.
Information gathered by this publication shows that the girl lives with his family at the estate where her father works as a tea plucker. It is here where she met Bernard who had been raping her for close to seven months.
The girl’s father James Kamanga told our reporter on Saturday that he had no knowledge on the issue until some people tipped him that his daughter was showing some signs of pregnancy.
“After my sister Rita Moyo tipped me about the issue I pressed my daughter and she told me that she has been sleeping with Bernard without using condoms since May last year,” said Kamanga.
The revelation irked him to the extent that he wanted to manhandle Bernard for raping his daughter but some villagers advised him to report the matter to police.
“The police referred us to Kavuzi Health Centre for medical examination which indeed proved that my daughter has been defiled and she is four months pregnant.
“This prompted the police to arrest Bernard on charges of defilement such that as I am speaking now, he is in police custody waiting to appear in court,” he added.
Police publicist for the district Sergeant Ignatius Esau who confirmed the scandal maintained that the rapist will appear in court soon to answer charges of defilement in accordance with section 138 of the penal code. The maximum penalty for the offence is life imprisonment with hard labor.
The suspect hails from traditional authority Kachindamoto in Dedza while the victimized girl hails from Traditional authority Mzikuwola in Mzimba district.
