Gabadinho Mhango’s move from Bloemfontein Celtic to Bidvest Wits will affect the Malawi national football team as the player will likely be out of action for up to 6 months.

The South African Premier Soccer League allows each team in the league to register a maximum of five foreign players.

Bidvest Wits have already used up their quota of foreign players and will have to offload one foreign player for Gabadinho to play for them before the next transfer window.

The former Big Bullets striker’s move has received some criticism from soccer pundits in the country.

Bloemfontein chairman Max Tshabalala also said:

“The club was stunned by Mhango’s pre-contract signing with Wits after having numerous discussions with him and his agent for more than a year”.

The move is said to have been negotiated without the knowledge of Celtic. Mhango was expected to be one of the leading strikers for the Flames in their upcoming games against Guinea and Swaziland following Flames coach Ernest Mtawali’s announcement that he is no longer going to use a youthful squad but he will now have more experienced players.

Gabadinho’s six month absence from competitive football will likely cripple Mtawali’s plans.

The Flames will face Guinea in their first game this year at the Kamuzu Stadium in the African Cup qualifiers.
