Revealed: Police officers paying money for promotion

A fraud in which Malawi  senior police officers were selling promotions for 40 thousand kwacha has been uncovered at Police Headquarters in Lilongwe.

The fraud, which was perpetrated during the 2015 promotions for police officers would have gone unnoticed, but Malawi24 investigations have revealed through an inside source.

PoliceSources revealed that during the promotions for officers in 2015, officers who were promoted in their rank are alleged to have paid Mk40,000 each as bribe to the officers involved in conducting the assessments for promotion.

Confiding with this publication investigations, he said Inspector Trapence of Confidential Registry in Area 30 has been transferred to Bulala Police Unit for selling promotions at a price of Mk40,000 “The money was collected by Sub Inspector Goster of Lilongwe station.

He was telling us that its his friend from police headquarters needing the money. He was charging Mk50, 000 but after bargaining we paid Mk40, 000. It is Bravo Sub Owen who spilled the beans to Deputy Inspector General of police,” stated the source.

Meanwhile, Rev Inspector Matewere has been transferred to a police unit in Northern part of Malawi. His transfer has been influenced by the prayer he made a new year’s party police had at area 30.

In his prayer, Matewele condemned other police officials for promotions based on relationship and money in which other police officers ululated. Police is one of the departments in Malawi where promotion are based on relationship and friendship.

Police authorities are yet to clear the reports.
