Malawi super league relegated side, Fisd Wizards owner Peter Mponda has come out of his shell to announce that his side will never relocate to Lilongwe under any circumstances.
This comes days after the team’s sponsors, Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (FISD) demanded the relocation of the lower division side to Lilongwe as a condition to continue sponsoring the team.
However, Mponda has told Fisd that his side is going nowhere.
“The condition was for us to remain in the Super League but we failed. We have heard your intentions through the media that if we are to safeguard this sponsorship, we must relocate to Lilongwe.
“However, the team is going nowhere as such, we are pleading with you to formally inform us of your stand at this point,” said Mponda in a letter sent to Fisd management.
Reacting to Mponda’s letter, Fisd managing director Frank Mwenechanya said the choice is in the hands of the Mponda but was quick to say that if he refuses to move the club to Lilongwe, the company will pull out of the sponsorship deal.
“We have told them what to do. They must decide. If they don’t want to relocate to Lilongwe, then we will have no choice but to pull out of the sponsorship deal with them.
“This issue is not new to them. We discussed this even before signing the contract for logistical reasons but if they don’t want, fine, we will move out of the deal. Their contract with us expired and we will only extend the deal if they relocate to Lilongwe,” said Mwenechanya.
Wizards were a marvel to watch in the top flight with their tiki taka style of football but failure to win games saw them finish the just ended season on position 15 with 21 points and in the process they got relegated.
