In an effort to curb Malaria in the country, government says it will distribute mosquito nets and it is now in the process of identifying beneficiaries.

Ministry of health spokesperson, Adrian Chikumbe, said when they are through with the registration exercise they will start the distribution of the free mosquito nets.

“We are in the process of identifying beneficiaries, once we are through with the process we will start distributing the nets,” said Chikumbe.

But a health rights activist in the country, Maziko Matemba, said government must introduce a fee for the mosquito nets as most beneficiaries misuse the nets because they know they did not spend on them.

“There is a tendency of misusing the nets and the fee will create a sense of ownership,” said Matemba.

He further said that government must increase awareness campaigns on the importance of using the nets.

“Mosquito nets are very important as they prevent Malaria which kills a lot of people and its usual that mosquito nets are purchased from other countries by other donor partners and government of which lots of money is spent,” he said.

He added that it is important that people use the nets wisely and not for fishing as it would be a waste of money.
