The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has saluted the Malawi national team for reaching the quarterfinals of the Cecafa championship in Ethiopia.
The Flames yesterday thrashed Djibouti 3-0 to register two wins out of two and top group C with 6 points thanks to goals from Gerald Phiri Jr , John Banda and Chiukepo Msowoya.
FAM general secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, says they are optimistic the Flames will win the tournament.
“First of all we need to congratulate the team for reaching quarterfinals. It just indicate that the building process is going on well. But we still challenge them to bring the cup home.”

“In Cosafa we grab the plate, so this time we need to win the cecafa as preparation for the next game against Guinea if we are to go to Gabon in 2018 African cup of Nations,” said Nyirenda.
He further sent a strong warning to the technical panel not to relax but to take the remaining games more seriously.
“Of course we have qualified but we need to add extra gear if we indeed need the cup. There are other teams like Uganda, Tanzania who are also strong so the players need to focus and face the challenge,” he said.
The Flames tomorrow will play second placed South Sudan in their last game of group C.
However, Flames assistant coach, Nswanzirimo Ramadhan, says in tomorrow’s encounter they will give a chance to other players as one way of building the team.
