People’s Party (PP) spokesperson and administrative secretary Kenneth Msonda has called on police to arrest Timothy Mtambo of Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and Gift Trapence of Centre for Development of the People (CEDEP) for promoting same sex acts in Malawi.

Msonda is due to appear before Blantyre resident magistrate court on 21st January after Mtambo and Trapence filed a complaint to the court over a Facebook post by the PP spokesperson.

In the Facebook post Msonda wrote: “Gays and Lesbians are worse than dogs; sons and daughters of the evil one-Jabulosi their father. Arresting them won’t address this problem because sooner or later they are being released on bail, the best way to deal with the problem is to kill them.”

The PP spokesperson made the remarks in his personal capacity however the two activists believe the sentiments have power to influence people to harm same sex couples.

In an interview with a local newspaper yesterday, the PP spokesperson expressed ignorance over the summons before raining extra killer punches on the activists.

“Now we know who homosexuals in Malawi are; these two gangsters you have just mentioned should not hide behind minority groups. If they themselves are homosexuals they should just come out,” said Msonda.

The battle lines have been drawn with Msonda ready to fight the duo in court once he learns about the summons. Earlier in the week, he emphasized not having any regrets for his controversial social media post.

However, Malawians have ridiculed the two activists for taking Msonda to court. They argue that everyone who ever said anything that has potential to hurt same sex couples should also be taken to court if that is the case.

Trapence was the first to fall out of favour with Malawians having attacked veteran musician Lucius Banda for his firm stand against same sex acts.
