Zomba Central Prison has stepped up security with the installation of CCTV cameras to strengthen surveillance and curb criminal activities inside the facility.
The new security system complements a scanning machine installed at the prison about a year ago, which the Malawi Prisons Service says has proved effective in enhancing security.
Speaking to Malawi24, Malawi Prisons Service spokesperson Meke said the CCTV cameras will help tighten security by allowing officers to monitor activities within the prison around the clock.
Meke said the cameras will also help tackle mobile phone-related fraud, as inmates and activities inside the facility will be under 24-hour surveillance.
The development is part of efforts by the Malawi Prisons Service to strengthen security infrastructure and prevent illegal activities in correctional facilities.
