Reggae comes home to Matchansi

For reggae lovers in Matchansi and surrounding areas, a Friday night that would normally require a trip into the city is coming closer to home.

6th Lounge at Matchansi in Lilongwe will host reggae giants Black Missionaries and Anthony Makondetsa this Friday, October 9, giving local fans an opportunity to watch two of Malawi’s recognised reggae acts perform live in their own neighbourhood.

The show is part of the venue’s growing effort to bring established musicians closer to communities outside the city’s traditional entertainment spots.

For 6th Lounge manager Marcus Mbidzi, the idea is not only about filling the venue but also giving people access to different forms of entertainment without having to travel far.

“We will continue to bring entertainment closer to the people as the place is within their localities. After hosting Afro-soul and urban music stars, now it’s time for reggae music,” said Mbidzi.

The venue has in recent months hosted artists including Lawi, Praise Umali, Kell Kay and Zeze Kingston, gradually building its profile as a place where fans can access live performances from established Malawian musicians.

This time, the focus shifts to reggae, with Black Missionaries and Makondetsa expected to take fans through some of their popular songs during what organisers describe as a night of live music.

The appearance of the two acts also brings together different generations of Malawi’s reggae music, giving fans an opportunity to experience established voices on one stage.

With the show taking place within the Matchansi community, 6th Lounge hopes the event will further strengthen its push to make major entertainment experiences accessible to people within their own localities.
