Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has appointed Andrew Kamkwalala as acting chief elections officer following the resignation of Andrew Mpesi.
Kamkwalala takes over with immediate effect, placing him in charge of the commission’s secretariat as it works on arrangements to fill the position permanently.
He has been serving as MEC’s deputy chief elections officer responsible for finance and administration since joining the commission on 1 November 2022.
Mpesi served as chief elections officer from 22 August 2022 until his resignation on 21 August 2026.
In a public notice signed by MEC chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja on 25 September 2026, the commission called on stakeholders to give Kamkwalala the necessary cooperation and support during his tenure.
The commission said it will work on modalities for filling the chief elections officer position substantively.
