Former Malawi President Joyce Banda has received international recognition at a high-level event held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Africa–US Presidential Forum, held on September 24, 2026, honoured Banda as a Global Servant Leader for Peace, with the official programme recognising her work in advancing higher education for women in science, technology, artificial intelligence and MBA programmes.
Banda, Malawi’s fourth president, was among presidential honourees recognised during an event that brought together African leaders and other international figures for discussions and ceremonies focused on peace, leadership and service.
The organisers listed Banda among the honourees alongside Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio.
The recognition adds to Banda’s international profile as a former African head of state who has remained involved in initiatives focusing on women’s empowerment, education and leadership.
The official programme specifically cited her contribution to higher education for women in STEM, AI and MBA programmes.
Speaking after receiving the recognition, Banda said the honour reflected the work she has pursued over many years to improve the lives of disadvantaged communities, women and young people.
She said the recognition should also encourage continued efforts to expand opportunities for women and young people, particularly through education and skills development.
The event was organized by World Peace Volunteers, the Nekotech Center of Excellence and the Africa–US Presidential Forum, in partnership with other organizations.
