Bishop Martin Mtumbuka has delivered a stinging verdict on Malawi’s governance, and government says there is only one response, “amen.”
Mtumbuka raised governance concerns during a Mass marking 125 years of the Catholic Church’s presence in Malawi at St Mary’s Nzama Parish in Ntcheu on September 19, 2026.
The bishop pointed to persistent power outages and the mismanagement of state-owned enterprises as some of the issues affecting the country.
He also accused political leaders of exploiting parastatals through their cronies while focusing on political vendettas instead of addressing problems facing Malawians.
Speaking to the local media on Tuesday, government spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba said the concerns raised by the Catholic bishop are genuine, but described them as “a prayer” that only deserves an “amen.”
Namalomba said the administration has promised to produce results within two years, asking Malawians to remain patient as government works to fix the problems it inherited.
Mtumbuka has previously criticised governments across the political divide.
In 2024, he condemned the administration of former president Lazarus Chakwera for what he described as a “glaring failure of leadership.”
