The Malawi Police Service has recovered two rifles, phones and three vehicles allegedly used by suspected kidnappers following the rescue of British national Nasrat Osman in Blantyre.
Police said the items were recovered during investigations into the abduction of the 47-year-old, who was kidnapped at Mount Pleasant on September 11, 2026.
According to a statement , police launched a special operation involving officers from the Police Headquarters, South West Region and Blantyre Police to locate and rescue Osman.
The operation began on Thursday at Mingale Village in Mpemba, where police exchanged fire with two men who were allegedly guarding Osman.
The two suspects were shot during the confrontation and later died from their injuries at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
Police identified the two as 43-year-old Mozambican national Marcolino Munguambe and 44-year-old Limbani Anthony from Mangochi.
Osman was rescued during the operation and taken to hospital for medical attention. Deputy Inspector General of Police responsible for operations, Dr Noel Kayira, was also shot in the stomach during the exchange of fire and remains admitted to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in a stable condition.
Police said investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the kidnapping, while the recovered weapons, phones and vehicles are expected to form part of the ongoing inquiry.
