Four suspected kidnappers have been shot dead in Mpemba, Blantyre, during a police operation that also left Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kayira injured.
The operation led to the rescue of kidnapped British national Nasrat Osman.
Kayira, the deputy inspector general responsible for operations, sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire.
He is receiving treatment at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital.
Police said the suspects were armed with an AK47 rifle and a Girsan Regard MC pistol.
The suspects were rushed to hospital after being shot.
They later died while receiving treatment, according to police. The four have not been identified.
Osman, 47, was kidnapped by four unidentified men at Mount Pleasant last week.
She was rescued during the intelligence-led operation.
Osman was also taken to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital after her rescue.
Police said she is receiving treatment and undergoing physical and mental health assessments.
Investigations into the kidnapping and the operation are continuing.
Police said more details will be provided in due course.
