The 2026 tobacco marketing season has officially closed after 21 weeks of trading, with 144.5 million kilogrammes of tobacco sold for US$286.1 million.
The Tobacco Commission says the tobacco was sold at an average price of US$1.98 per kilogramme as of Wednesday, September 9.
The Commission describes the 2026 marketing season as a success despite challenges, notably high rejection rates for tobacco sold through the auction system.
It says engagement with stakeholders helped resolve various issues during the season, including securing timely payment of farmers’ proceeds and ensuring the smooth flow of tobacco sales.
The Commission will conduct a clearance sale next week to facilitate the sale of tobacco currently held at re-handling centres.
Public Relations Officer Telephorus Chigwenembe says the Commission will publish a review of the 2026 tobacco marketing season, including the way forward, once all related market activities have been concluded.
