Traditional leaders in Salima have urged parents to teach children cultural values, warning that failure to pass on traditions is putting Malawi’s cultural heritage at risk.

The call came on Saturday from the guest of honour Senior Chief Kambwiri during a cultural promotion event organised by Love Community FM at Senior Chief Kalonga’s headquarters under the station’s Zathu Zosaiwalika project.

Kambwiri said parents must take the lead in passing traditional values to the next generation, arguing that many young people are growing up without a proper understanding of their cultural identity.

Kambwiri also said the misuse and misunderstanding of some human rights principles have contributed to weakening respect for traditional customs, a trend he believes is accelerating the loss of cultural values.

Senior Chief Kalonga welcomed the initiative and called for more cultural activities to expose young people to the customs and traditions of their ancestors.

Love Community FM Station Manager Henry Mlelemba said the station launched the project to help revive and preserve Malawi’s cultural heritage, describing culture as the foundation of the nation.

Mlelemba also encouraged young people to work hard in school while embracing their cultural identity.

The event featured cultural lessons, traditional games, and performances by Gule Wamkulu, Chimtali, and Chisamba dance groups, alongside demonstrations of local customs, including the preparation and consumption of mowa wa masese.

Love Community FM organised the event with support from COSOMA and Whitegate Investments as part of its ongoing Zathu Zosaiwalika campaign to preserve and promote Malawi’s cultural heritage.
