Dedza Police have arrested a 26-year-old man, John Bester, in connection with a case of theft from a motor vehicle which occurred on 31st January 2026 at around 10: 00 pm along the Dedza-Linthipe M1 road.

According to Beatrice Jefita, Dedza Police Station Public Relations Officer, Bester, along with three other accomplices who are still at large, had concealed themselves in nearby bushes along the road, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

They spotted a bus hauling a trailer, jumped onto it, forcibly broke it open, and stole several bags of groundnuts valued at K8,350,000.00.

The suspects reportedly hid the stolen groundnuts in the same bushes near the scene before fleeing. However, following a tip-off from the complainant, Dedza Police instituted investigations, leading to Bester’s arrest and the recovery of the stolen bags of groundnuts.

Bester, from Pinji Village in Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza District, is currently in police custody awaiting court appearance where he will answer a charge of theft from a motor vehicle.

Police are warning that they will not relent in pursuing the remaining suspects and have intensified investigations to track them down.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, as community cooperation remains key in the fight against crime.
