Pope Leo XIV is set to undergo surgery after doctors discovered a small nodule in his lung.
The abnormality was detected during medical examinations, prompting doctors to recommend its removal.
According to Vatican News, the Pope disclosed the development on Sunday during the Angelus, explaining that the nodule had been detected early and was well-localised.
Director of the Holy See Press Office Matteo Bruni later informed journalists that the operation was scheduled for the first days of the week at Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome, with recovery expected to take about seven days.
The Pope said he had decided to follow his doctors’ recommendations and thanked the faithful for their support.
He also appealed for prayers as he prepares for the procedure.
