A Mexican journalist was fatally shot on Friday, becoming the ninth member of the press killed in the country so far this year, human rights organisation Article 19 has reported.

Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, who ran a news website with a following of over 52,000 people, was attacked in Oaxaca state in southern Mexico, the latest entry in a count of journalist homicides documented by Reporters Without Borders.

According to the state prosecutor’s office, an armed group opened fire on Huesca Manzano and two other men, and he succumbed to his gunshot wounds.

Through his outlet, Pinotepa Comunica, he covered politics and community affairs in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, his home city. Alongside his journalism, he earned a living as a taxi driver.

Article 19, in a post on X, urged the prosecutor’s office to make his work as a journalist central to the investigation.

With more than 150 media workers killed since 1994, Reporters Without Borders ranks Mexico among the world’s most perilous countries in which to report the news.
