Malawi’s efforts to rebuild netball are receiving support beyond the court, with investment in umpire training and competition opportunities emerging as important steps towards strengthening the game.
The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) says its partnership with Nico Group is helping to support initiatives aimed at improving the administration and standards of netball, including the training of umpires.
NAM president Vitumbiko Gubuduza said the partnership had delivered benefits beyond the One Nico Top 12 National Netball Cup, supporting wider efforts to strengthen the sport.
The competition has entered its second season with Nico Group increasing its sponsorship from K60 million to K75 million, providing further financial backing for the tournament.
Nico Group Head of Marketing and Customer Experience Taweni Gondwe Xaba said the competition was helping nurture young female talent by giving aspiring netballers a platform to pursue professional careers.
She said continued investment could help Malawian players attract better contracts and compete internationally, highlighting the potential of netball to create opportunities for young women.
As the sport works to strengthen its structures, the challenge will be to ensure that support benefits not only the players competing for honours but also the officials and institutions responsible for sustaining the game.
For Malawi’s netball community, developing skilled umpires, improving administration and creating opportunities for emerging talent could be important steps towards building a stronger future for the sport.
