Something is going wrong at Malawi’s major airports, and MPs are warning that passengers could ultimately pay the price.

The Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, Statutory Corporations and State Enterprises has warned that funding challenges facing Airports Development Limited (ADL) could compromise aviation safety in the country.

The committee has raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of landing equipment at the country’s major airports.

Committee Chairperson Sylvester Ayuba James said ADL generates foreign exchange through international landing fees but struggles to access the funds needed to maintain and upgrade airport equipment.

“The situation has implications for aviation safety,” James said.

The Committee was scheduled to meet key aviation and finance stakeholders, including ADL, to discuss operational challenges facing the air transport sector in the country.

However, the meeting has been cancelled after Treasury officials indicated they would not citing pressing commitments.

James then said the Committee will continue engaging relevant authorities on outstanding aviation retention fees and the funding required proper operation of the sector.
