The Malawi Police Service (MPS) says 62 illegal muzzle-loading firearms have been surrendered in the Northern Region during the September Firearms Amnesty Month.
Of the firearms, 58 were surrendered in Rumphi and four in Nkhata Bay.
Deputy National Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Alfred Chimthere said muzzle-loading firearms are commonly used in game poaching in national parks and game reserves.
The MPS has commended those who surrendered the firearms, saying their actions will help improve community safety and protect Malawi’s wildlife.
The firearms will be destroyed on July 9 next year, which is observed globally as Gun Destruction Day.
Police have also urged the public to report anyone suspected of possessing illegal firearms to help prevent gun-related crimes and improve community safety.
