A broken bridge and a rough road that have made movement difficult for communities in Phalombe are now set for a major facelift.

Phalombe South residents are set to benefit from development projects worth more than K4.2 billion, including a new bridge, road rehabilitation and a secondary school under the Reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

The projects include the K137 million Mukaka Bridge and the K1.7 billion rehabilitation of the Likulezi-Mpambachulu Road up to Mwalawoyera.

The road is expected to make it easier for people to travel, transport goods and conduct business while improving links between Phalombe, Mulanje and Chiradzulu.

Launching the projects, Phalombe South Member of Parliament Tiaone Hendry said the road would open up opportunities for communities along the route.

“This is a generational development. We will remember the DPP and President Professor Mutharika for ages,” she said.

Hendry urged communities to take ownership of the projects by monitoring construction works and protecting the infrastructure once completed

She also warned residents and Development Committees against allowing corruption to eat into resources meant for development.

Phalombe District Council Works Committee chairperson Dickson Khamukhamu said the council would work with relevant committees to ensure contractors build strong and durable structures.

Traditional Authority Mkhumba asked communities to cooperate with contractors, especially when resolving land issues along the road.

The road and bridge projects are not the only major works taking shape in the constituency.

Last week, the council handed over a site at Nalijiri in Traditional Authority Nyambalo for construction of a new Community Day Secondary School.

The K2.39 billion Nalijiri CDSS will have two classroom blocks, an administration block, a staff house, VIP and staff toilets, water reticulation, solar-powered electricity and other external works.

The projects are being funded through the Reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which has been rolled out across all five constituencies in Phalombe.
