Mighty Wanderers pushed Bob Mpinganjira out after losing the Airtel Top 8 final. Five weeks later, they have brought him back to fix the mess.
The dramatic U-turn has left one question hanging over the Nomads: did the club remove the wrong man in the first place?
Wanderers announced on Sunday that Mpinganjira had been reinstated as head coach with immediate effect, following what the club described as a “thorough review” of its technical setup.
His suspension on August 31 came a day after Wanderers lost 2-1 to Ekhaya FC in the Airtel Top 8 final. The club did not publicly give a specific reason for the decision, leaving supporters to connect his removal with the team’s failure to secure the cup.
Yet, when Mpinganjira was suspended, Wanderers were not struggling in the league. They were sitting second in the FDH Bank Premiership with 29 points from 14 matches, having won eight, drawn five and lost just one.
That made his suspension difficult to explain purely on league form. Just days before the Top 8 final, Wanderers had beaten Red Lions 2-1 to remain among the league’s leading sides.
But after Mpinganjira’s departure, the Nomads’ fortunes took another turn. MacDonald Nginde Mtetemera was handed the interim coaching role, but Wanderers went on to lose four consecutive competitive matches during his spell, including their two CAF Champions League meetings with Simba and a league defeat to Blue Eagles.
The difficult run has now been followed by a remarkable U-turn from the club, with Mpinganjira returning to a team that has experienced a turbulent five weeks since his suspension.
The Wanderers board says the existing Technical Panel will remain intact “for the time being”, while warning that any further changes will be announced later.
For Mpinganjira, the return represents another chance to continue the job he started when he took over as acting coach in November 2024 before being confirmed as head coach in January 2025.
But this time, he returns with one major question still hanging over him: what exactly changed between his suspension and reinstatement?
The club has not provided that answer. What is clear, however, is that Bob Mpinganjira’s Wanderers story is far from over.
