Malawi is running on empty. The lights keep going off, taps are running dry and motorists are hunting for fuel, yet President Arthur Peter Mutharika has remained largely silent.
Now, political expert says the President must break that silence and speak directly to Malawians about the hardships gripping the country.
Speaking to Malawi24, George Chaima said the worsening situation requires Mutharika to reassure citizens that he is aware of the difficulties they are facing.
“Mutharika is a quiet person. He doesn’t like talking to the public; that is how he is. But with how things are now, he should address the nation,” said Chaima.
He said a presidential address would give Malawians confidence that Mutharika understands the problems affecting their daily lives.
Chaima said hearing directly from the President would also show that government is engaging with the challenges instead of leaving citizens to deal with them on their own.
He believes Mutharika’s direct address could help reassure citizens while explaining what government is doing to tackle the problems facing the country.
The call comes as prolonged electricity disruptions continue to affect households and businesses in different parts of the country.
Water shortages have also left some residents struggling to access one of life’s most basic necessities, while fuel scarcity continues to put pressure on motorists and public transport.
