Mutharika appoints new commissioners

President Arthur Peter Mutharika has appointed nine members to serve on the ninth cohort of the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC).

The appointments, which took effect on September 20, 2026, will run for three years, according to the Office of the President and Cabinet.

Those appointed are Orison Joseph Themba Chaponda, Viwemi Chavula, Dr Godfrey Dalitso Kangaude, Andrew Kavala, Lingalireni Mihowa, Teresa Chirwa-Ndanga and Stella Nkhonya.

The Law Commissioner and the Ombudsman will also serve on the commission as members.

According to OPC, the appointments have been made in accordance with the Constitution of Malawi.

The government has congratulated the new commissioners and wished them success in their mandate to promote and protect human rights in the country.
