Malawi’s roads are slowly getting quieter as businesses turn to electric mobility, with more vehicles now running without relying on conventional fuel.
The shift is gaining momentum as organisations look for alternatives to fuel-powered transport and the pollution it brings, putting cleaner mobility on the road as a practical response to environmental pressure.
National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc is among the latest businesses making the shift, adding one electric vehicle and four electric motorcycles to its fleet as part of efforts to cut its carbon footprint.
The bank acquired the vehicles from Sky Energy Africa on Friday, expanding its use of electric mobility as it works to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
NBM plc Chief Risk Officer Charles Ulaya said the move followed an assessment of the environmental impact of the bank’s operations.
He said the transition to electric mobility forms part of a wider environmental strategy that will also include increased use of renewable energy.
“We are also looking at reducing use of generators in some of our service centres as part of this plan. We are planning to have a solar farm here at the head office, while some of our ATMs and Service Centres are also going to be running on solar power,” said Ulaya.
The latest acquisition is not NBM plc’s first move into electric mobility.
Sky Energy Africa said the bank had previously acquired an electric vehicle from the company.
Sky Energy Africa Founder and Managing Director Schizzo Thomson said the latest purchase showed growing commitment to electric mobility.
“This means a lot. It demonstrates commitment by National Bank, because this is not their first electric car. They are adding electric cars as well as electric bikes into their pool,” said Thomson.
Thomson said the growing presence of electric vehicles on Malawi’s roads was evidence of increasing interest in electric mobility among businesses and individuals.
NBM plc is also encouraging its customers and other stakeholders to consider steps that can help reduce their environmental impact.
