MUST turned the Southern Region championship into a painful outing for KuHES, taking victories in both men’s and women’s football before KuHES found some relief in netball.
At the Mo626 Varsity Games Southern Region Championship, MUST Ladies opened the day with a 2-0 victory over KuHES in women’s football.
The MUST men’s side then completed the football double with a convincing 4-1 win over KuHES at MUST.
KuHES managed to salvage some pride in netball, beating MUST 21-16 in a closely contested match.
KuHES netball captain Bakita Mkhula said the team had to fight back after falling behind early.
“They were leading us, but we managed to come back. We were trailing 5-2 in the first quarter, but we came back strongly in the second quarter and eventually won the game,” said Mkhula.
National Bank of Malawi plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Mphepo-Hiwa said the games had showcased the talent and competitive spirit among students.
“We are pleased with how the games have gone today. We have seen exciting, competitive matches, with the students demonstrating talent, determination, and teamwork,” she said.
Mphepo-Hiwa urged participating universities to maintain discipline and sportsmanship as the competition continues.
She said the tournament also provides students with an opportunity to develop their sporting talent and build relationships beyond the field.
TESSAM General Secretary Henry Chiphaka said the latest fixtures were part of the second phase of the competition.
KuHES missed the first phase because its students were sitting examinations.
“This is the second phase, where KuHES is playing against each of the teams that played last time. Once these games are completed, we will tally the points to determine the teams that finish in first and second positions,” said Chiphaka.
Meanwhile, Catholic University failed to turn up for its scheduled men’s and women’s football and netball fixtures against KuHES.
The university consequently forfeited three points from each fixture in line with the competition rules.
The Mo626 Varsity Games, sponsored by National Bank of Malawi plc, bring together students from universities and colleges across Malawi.
Regional qualifiers will determine the teams that advance to the Top 8 knockout stages.
