South Africa has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa will not be available for public engagements after falling ill.

Ramaphosa returned to South Africa on Monday after attending the BRICS Summit in India, where he participated in the high-level gathering alongside other leaders.

In a statement issued by the Presidency through Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, the President has been booked off from public engagements due to ill health.

“The Presidency wishes to advise that, due to ill health, President Cyril Ramaphosa is currently booked off from public engagements,” reads part of the statement.

However, the Presidency has not disclosed the nature of his illness.

The statement says Ramaphosa has asked respective ministers to represent him at scheduled public engagements where possible.

The Presidency has not indicated how long the President is expected to remain away from public engagements.
