Malawi today marks one year since millions of citizens went to the polls in the country’s 2025 tripartite elections, voting for a President, members of Parliament and local government councilors.
On September 16, 2025, polling centers opened across the country as voters turned out to determine who would lead Malawi for the next five years.
The presidential race was won by former president Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who secured 57 percent of the vote.
Incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera finished second in the contest, bringing an end to his first term in office.
Mutharika’s victory marked his return to State House after he lost the presidency to Chakwera in the 2020 fresh presidential election.
The election also saw Malawians vote for parliamentary representatives and councilors, making it one of the country’s major exercises in multiparty democracy.
Voting day was marked by long queues at several polling centers as citizens waited to cast their ballots, while electoral officials proceeded with the counting and verification of votes after polling closed.
The 2025 election came five years after Malawi’s historic 2020 fresh presidential election, which was ordered after the Constitutional Court nullified the 2019 presidential election results over irregularities.
As Malawi looks back today, September 16 remains a notable date in the country’s political calendar the day voters returned to the ballot box and once again determined the direction of national leadership.
