Parliament has suspended plans to establish joint committees to investigate government operations..
In a media statement seen by Malawi24, the Office of the Speaker said Parliament would comply with the court order issued on September 4, 2026, which bars implementation of the decision to establish the committees.
“The Joint Committees will therefore not proceed, in compliance with the Court Order,” the statement said.
The development follows a meeting between Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman and President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at State House on Saturday.
Parliament said the meeting followed the Speaker’s September 2 press briefing and described the discussions between the two leaders as “very cordial”.
According to Parliament, both Mutharika and Suleman reaffirmed their respect for the constitutional principle of separation of powers among the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.
The suspension comes amid a legal dispute over Parliament’s decision to establish the joint committees to probe the operations of various government institutions.
The court order has now halted the legislature’s plans, leaving the proposed investigations on hold pending further developments in the legal dispute.
