Women golfers are chasing more than trophies this year, with K65.2 million putting the spotlight on the growing Ladies Interclub Golf Tournament.
The money has come from Ethanol Company Limited (EthCo), which is backing the tournament for the seventh consecutive year.
The tournament will take place at Kasasa Golf Club in Dwangwa this weekend.
This year’s competition will also introduce Swinging for Her Future, an initiative aimed at supporting girls’ education through golf.
EthCo chief executive officer Lusubilo Chakaniza said the tournament’s growth has created an opportunity to extend its impact beyond the golf course.
“As we celebrate seven years of sponsoring the Ladies Interclub Golf Tournament, we are proud to see the event continue to grow as a platform for women’s empowerment, partnership and community impact,” said Chakaniza.
Ladies Golf Union of Malawi (LGUoM) Lady Anchor Lusayo Sibale described the K65.2 million contribution as the biggest sponsorship the tournament has received so far.
“As a Lady Anchor of the Ladies Golf Union and also a host, I am very excited to host this big tournament ever organised in the history of ladies golf in the country,” said Sibale.
She said golfers were equally excited to be part of the new initiative supporting girls’ education.
The tournament is being held in partnership with Press Corporation plc, Illovo Sugar Malawi, Carbon Dioxide and Allied Products (Private) Limited, Nkhanga Essential Support Services and PressCane Limited.
Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Roza Mbilizi, an award-winning golfer, is expected to be Guest of Honour.
The event is also expected to shine a spotlight on Dwangwa’s agricultural and tourism potential and generate economic activity in the area.
EthCo’s sponsorship has grown from K4.5 million in 2022 to K18 million in 2025, while participation reached 70 golfers last year.
