Luchenza is expected to take a bigger role in Malawi’s secondary cities drive as government renews its commitment to modernising the city and unlocking its growth potential.

Minister of Lands and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu made the commitment on Thursday after meeting the management team of Luchenza Municipal Council to discuss strategic initiatives aimed at promoting local and sustainable development.

Chipungu, who is also Member of Parliament for the area, said Luchenza must be adequately equipped and modernised as Malawi advances its plans for the development of secondary cities.

“As Malawi advances its vision for the development of secondary cities, our priority is to ensure that Luchenza is not left behind, but is instead equipped, modernised, and strategically positioned to achieve sustainable growth,” Chipungu said.

He said government remains committed to implementing initiatives that will contribute to transforming Malawi into a developed and prosperous nation as envisaged under Malawi 2063.

“Our commitment to transforming Malawi into a developed and prosperous nation remains steadfast. We will continue to drive progress and implement initiatives that contribute to the achievement of Malawi 2063,” he said.

Malawi 2063 is the country’s long-term development vision, which seeks to transform Malawi into a wealthy, self-reliant and industrialised nation.
