While Collins Magalasi, one of the ruling DPP seniors may have hoped to spend the weekend at home with his family, a stalled court session has kept him behind bars at Maula Prison.
The former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) chief executive will now remain in custody until Monday, when his case is expected to resume.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shukrani Kumbani reserved his bail ruling last week.
Magalasi is on remand over allegations that he cyber-spied on President Peter Mutharika and other senior government officials.
The State argued that keeping him in custody would give investigators more time to complete their investigations.
But his legal troubles have since widened.
Magalasi is also facing fresh charges of money laundering, theft and facilitating fraud involving K3 billion from the Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF).
The State alleges the charges are linked to transactions surrounding the Amaryllis Hotel.
The fresh charges add to the pressure facing Magalasi as he continues to fight for his freedom.
Speaking to the local media earlier, his lawyer Andy Kaonga said the defence team would consult Magalasi on the way forward regarding the matter.
Magalasi remains at Maula, with his bail fate hanging on the court’s Monday proceedings.
