From fun videos to environmental champion: Meet Malawi’s ‘Green Village Champion
What started as a young man’s pastime has turned into a growing campaign against environmental destruction, attracting attention from environmental advocates and social media users.
Masautso Divaison, a 24-year-old from Jolofani Village under Traditional Authority Khongoni Kasiya in Lilongwe, has gained attention through videos highlighting the dangers of deforestation and soil erosion.
In one of his trending videos, Divaison filmed an area affected by deforestation and used the footage to remind people of the dangers of cutting down trees without replacing them.
In another video, he tackled soil erosion, highlighting how the problem is affecting the environment and warning communities about its long-term consequences.
His message has caught the attention of environmental advocate Matthews Malata, who has expressed interest in meeting the young environmental enthusiast.
Malata first took to Facebook looking for Divaison after being repeatedly tagged in the young man’s videos.
“Eya Chigwembechi ni soil erosion,” Malata wrote, asking people with Divaison’s contact details to share them.
He later revealed that he had managed to speak to Divaison and was planning to meet him.
“Thank you, this morning I spoke to Masautso and will be meeting him soon. For now get to know him,” Malata said.
According to Malata, Divaison has produced two environmental videos so far and is working on another one.
Divaison completed Form Four at Kasiya Secondary School and is interested in repeating the class to improve his points. He last attended school in 2024.
Away from environmental content, Divaison runs a small video show centre that earns him about K30,000 a month.
He lives with both parents, who are farmers, and is not married.
Despite his growing popularity, Divaison says no content creator who has used his videos or name has contacted him.
For now, the young man continues to create content, using a simple phone and his surroundings to draw attention to environmental problems facing communities.
And as his videos reach more people, what began as fun is slowly becoming a voice for environmental conservation.
