Parliament exploded into chaos on Wednesday after Environment Minister Patricia Wisikesi ignited a fierce confrontation by telling opposition lawmaker Moses Kunkuyu and others to “Black box, keep quiet.”
The dramatic exchange unfolded as lawmakers scrutinised a deal involving a company seeking to establish a fertilizer manufacturing plant in Malawi, a project the government says will boost local fertilizer production and improve access for farmers.
Trouble began when Wisikesi rose to contribute to the debate. Opposition MPs repeatedly interrupted her, demanding clarity on the agreement with the company. Among those pressing for answers was Kunkuyu.
In response, the minister told the opposition benches, “Black box, keep quiet,” a remark that immediately triggered an uproar in the chamber.
Several MPs rose in protest, accusing the minister of attempting to silence debate, while others called on the Speaker to restore order. The disorder forced proceedings to be suspended briefly.
Although Kunkuyu did not respond directly to the remark, the exchange dominated parliamentary proceedings and quickly became the day’s talking point.
The government maintains the project will strengthen local fertilizer production and reduce costs for farmers. However, the opposition insists more transparency is needed and has demanded full disclosure of the agreement before Parliament makes any decision.
