At least 150 Malawians displaced in South Africa have started their journey back home, with government assuring the public that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure their safe return and onward travel to their communities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the first two buses carrying the returnees left Western Cape Province on Saturday under the government’s Voluntary Repatriation Exercise.

The returnees are among foreign nationals who had been displaced and accommodated in temporary camps in Mossel Bay, Western Cape Province. Their evacuation was coordinated by a multidisciplinary Malawi Task Team deployed through the Malawi High Commission in South Africa.

According to the ministry, the buses will travel by road through Zimbabwe and Mozambique before entering Malawi via Mwanza Border Post on Monday, June 8, 2026.

Upon arrival, the group will proceed to Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, where officials will process them before facilitating transport to their respective home districts.

The ministry said the repatriation exercise demonstrates government’s commitment to protecting the safety and welfare of Malawians living abroad, adding that it will continue working with relevant ministries, departments and agencies to provide transit and consular support to all affected citizens.
