Zambia and Malawi have moved to strengthen military cooperation amid rising regional security concerns, with Zambia Army Commander, Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele, holding high level talks with Malawi Defence Force Commander, General George Alexander Jaffu (Jnr), in Lilongwe on Thursday.
The meeting, held on May 28 at the Malawi Defence Force headquarters, signals a growing shift toward stronger joint defence strategies between the two neighbouring countries as they confront increasingly complex cross-border threats, including organised crime and regional instability.
Behind closed doors, the two commanders focused on practical measures to enhance cooperation, including strengthening border security systems, expanding intelligence sharing, and coordinating responses to emerging security risks.
The discussions also reinforced the longstanding military ties between Zambia and Malawi, which officials say remain central to maintaining stability along their shared border.
Military sources described the engagement as more than a routine diplomatic courtesy call, framing it instead as part of a broader effort to build a more coordinated regional security framework. As threats evolve beyond national boundaries, both countries appear to be prioritising collective defence approaches over isolated responses.
Lieutenant General Zyeele’s visit comes as he attends the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chiefs of Defence Forces Sub Committee meeting in Lilongwe a key platform where military leaders from across Southern Africa assess security trends and map out joint interventions.
The forum is expected to focus on strengthening collective security mechanisms and improving collaboration among member states.
Security analysts note that such engagements are becoming increasingly vital as the region grapples with transnational challenges that demand unified action, including trafficking networks and sporadic instability in parts of Southern Africa.
In a related engagement, Lieutenant General Zyeele also met Zambia’s High Commissioner to Malawi, Panji Kaunda, who praised the Army Commander for advancing military diplomacy and fostering closer ties among regional armed forces.
Kaunda emphasised that defence cooperation plays a critical role not only in safeguarding peace and security but also in promoting regional integration and sustainable development. He further highlighted the importance of unity and shared purpose among Southern African nations in addressing common challenges.
The visit underscores a renewed commitment by both Zambia and Malawi to deepen defence collaboration, reflecting a broader regional push for coordinated security responses at a time when stability remains a top priority.
