Malawi coach Kalisto Pasuwa is confident the Flames will come back stronger when they face Ethiopia again after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat in an international friendly.
The Flames were caught cold, conceding the only goal of the match inside the opening minute after a lapse in concentration from a set-piece situation.
Despite the early setback, Pasuwa felt his side recovered well and matched the hosts for large parts of the contest.
“We settled well and started playing good football,” said the coach, who was encouraged by his team’s response after conceding.
Pasuwa believes Malawi created enough opportunities to avoid defeat, especially in the second half when tactical changes helped his side gain greater control of the game.
“We had more clear chances than our opponents, but at this level if you don’t take your chances, you get punished,” he said.
The Zimbabwean tactician praised the fighting spirit shown by his players, particularly the younger members of the squad, whom he said battled hard in search of an equaliser.
Looking ahead to the rematch, Pasuwa said Malawi must improve their concentration and defending but remains optimistic the lessons from Saturday’s defeat will lead to a stronger performance next time out.
