Students from various higher learning institutions in the Northern Region danced through the night and into sunrise as the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc hosted the Mo626 Northern Region Intercollege Social Weekend in Mzuzu, an event that left many students smiling.

The event attracted students from Mzuzu University, Mzuzu Technical College, Malawi Institute of Journalism, and the University of Livingstonia, who turned up in large numbers dressed in creative costumes inspired by themes such as Peaky Blinders, The Incredibles, and Batman during the colourful “Tiphwasuke” afternoon session.

The venue transformed into a showcase of creativity as students competed for the best costume awards, with winners walking away with K250,000 cash prizes while several others received NBM plc branded merchandise.

As night fell, the atmosphere shifted into a high-energy music festival, with thousands of students filling the dance floor. Trappy Beats ignited the crowd with popular songs including Makheta and Ndikubereka, drawing loud cheers and energetic dancing from revellers.

One of the biggest highlights of the night came when hip-hop star Fredokiss made a surprise appearance despite not being on the official lineup. Students erupted into excitement as he performed crowd favourites including Amafila Fredo and Thawi Zanji, with fans singing along word for word.

The momentum continued as Crispy Malawi took to the stage with performances of Nkhatabay, Tili bwiNO, and the fan-demanded Top Sheila. Music sensation Kell Kay also thrilled the audience with hits such as Billu, Mayomayo, and Lobola, prompting hundreds of students to illuminate the venue with cellphone flashlights.

Joe Ikon brought explosive energy with performances of Pang’ono and Agulu, while Achina Gattah Ase kept the crowd engaged with tracks including MG1, Fact Up, and Amah.

As dawn approached, Amapiano artist Zeze Kingston closed the show with performances of Ndilira Mumvula, Ndasangalala, Ndathela Pano, and Kagwere Uko, carrying the celebration into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Speaking after the event, NBM plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Mphepo-Hiwa said the bank remains committed to creating meaningful experiences for young people while strengthening its connection with students.

“We understand that young people are not only looking for banking solutions but also meaningful experiences that bring them together, inspire creativity, and celebrate talent. This social weekend is part of our commitment to supporting youth development and campus life,” she said.

One of the students, Yohane Banda of Mzuzu University, described the event as unforgettable.
